Photos: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Atlanta

Happy November 1st! It’s the official beginning of NaNoWriMo, and I didn’t make the progress I wanted today, so I thought I’d at least get a blog post out before turning my attention back to the somewhat daunting task of writing 50,000 words in 30 days. I felt ready to take on the challenge yesterday, but I fear I might have been overly confident. Time will tell, however, and I’m not giving up yet.
Nor am I close to giving up on a cure for cancer.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Atlanta, 2011
Over the weekend I participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk here in Atlanta, and I’ve decided to continue participating in the annual event for as long as fate allows. There is something incredibly empowering about so many people united, and walking together, for a potential future where cancer holds no dominion.
Even though the loss of life to this insidious disease is discouraging, to lose faith in finding a cure is worse. To do so would feel as if I’m turning my back on the countless souls whose lives hang in the balance right this moment, and I simply can’t do that–not now, not ever.
I hope you enjoy the photos, and even if they encourage only one person more to join the fight against cancer, they’ve more than served their purpose…
We decided to take MARTA into downtown Atlanta, because we knew parking would be a nightmare. The train pulled up at 8:00am. The walk started at 9:00am. Even though my husband and I had to drive to get our two friends, we still made good time.
My friend, Sandy, decided to wear silly socks with pink flowers, in a show of support and to keep her legs warm. It was pretty cold waiting for the train.
MARTA arrived, and we were on the way.
When we arrived, the walk had already started 10 minutes before, so we simply joined the throng. This is my friend, Anna, featured in the white coat.
The cancer walk started at Centennial Olympic Park, and we got to see the Georgia State Capitol in the distance.
For as far as I and my camera could see, there were people walking. The turnout was astounding.
Major intersections were closed down for the cancer walk, and this policewoman had her work cut out for her directing traffic.
This walker had a picture of her mother (a breast cancer survivor) pinned to her back in a show of support.
If you dyed this woman's hair the same as the tree up ahead in front of her, would you be able to tell the difference?
Squirrel Statue we passed on the walk.

One of the songs playing in Centennial Olympic Park when we reached the finish line was V.I.C’s “Wobble Baby”
Walk participants dancing to the music in Centennial Olympic Park. Everyone was celebrating the success of the walk.
More dancing.
Clearly I liked the dancing, because I kept taking pictures...

V-103 radio station was at the cancer walk, and they were right when they said "Atlanta showed out", because we did. We'll be ready next year, too.
Back to the MARTA station.
This crowd actually looks small compared to the number of walk participants. When we left, there was still a huge crowd at Centennial Park.
That’s all I have for today. Hope you enjoyed the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk photos. I hope you had a terrific Halloween, and I wish you a great week!
