Music: Winter Returns

Winter is back

I awoke this morning and realized winter has sneaked in the back door already. No, It’s not the official start date of winter yet, but it surely looks and feels like winter in Georgia. The temperatures have dropped enough to be uncomfortable, and the trees are mostly bare. Their formerly brilliant autumn coats lie on the ground, waiting to be crunched underfoot or spirited off by the chilling wind, and the branches are long, spindly fingers reaching towards a smoky blanket of sky. The natural world is slowing to a crawl, and the landscape is ominous but beautiful in it’s solemnity.

For Music Monday, it seems fitting to share winter songs and get a head start on welcoming the season. I don’t particularly like winter, but it is an inevitable part of life, so I’m making the most of it. Here are some of my musical finds for the week:

There is no way to implement a winter music theme without including this amazing song from Tori Amos.

A classic, and yes, the original version was done by them and not Glee (groan)

What would a winter theme post be without Vivaldi?

I would be remiss not to include The Bangles, since I am a child of the 80′s (although I prefer the 90′s)

This song is just plain pretty.

Mumford & Sons gets all the love in the US, but John Smith gets love from me, too. But speaking of which…

How could I not include this song?

Ah, yes, The Mamas & The Papas. This song brings back memories of my mom.

THE END

I know I missed dozens of songs, but I did find some good ones. What other winter-themed songs would you include in this list? Tell me in the comments.

If you enjoyed this post, I invite you to read the previous one: Leaving the Toilet Seat Up. I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to read my posts. Makes me  :-) every time.

  1. Oh Vivaldi!!! And the poetic way you described winter's onset…breathtaking! Monday is looking sooo much better after coming here. Thank you Amberr! :D

    • Maureen, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Hope the weekend was great and winter is good to you this year. Playful hugs and fun stuff! :-)

  2. Some new ones for me! I'm another who loves Dean Martin, and even though I love the original, that guitar intro on Hazy Shade of Winter was just begging for an electric guitar. The Bangles rocked it.

  3. never heard of any of them. and is it winter already? it's like 61 here :D hehehe

    • Jenny, it feels like winter in the last week or so. It's supposed to warm up to 67 today, but it's cold in the mornings!

  4. I had the prviledge to see Tori Amos live and when she did Winter…wow!:D

  5. Love Vivaldi! I wish I could play the violin!

Love those crazy-ass Brits! They have a sound all their own!

And the Mamas and the Papas are from my era! Miss Mama Cass! Her voice was fantastic!

    Great list of songs Amberr!

    • Irene, I love crazy ass Brits, too. I love the Mamas and the Papas. That song has always been a favorite of mine.

  6. Great list Amberr. Thank you. Can I also nominate the late, great and lamented Eva Cassidy's Autumn Leaves. I know it's not quite winter but she sings "And soon I'll hear old winter's song". It is such a beautiful song. Here are the lyrics in full:

The falling leaves drift by my window
The falling leaves of red and gold
I see your lips the summer kisses
The sunburned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

  7. My nephews would say the song, "Jingle Bells, Batman smells…" should be on the list! :)

  8. I LOVE the song BABY its cold outside!!!!!!

    Thanks for the sweet memories!!!

  9. I'm going with the winter theme and thinking about the following –

80's – Long Cold Winter – Cinderella. I miss solid hair metal.

Hip Hop – Coldest Winter – Kayne West. Pure brilliance on this album and a precursor to what was to come next.

Happy Thoughts – December – Norah Jones. i could listen to Norah Jones sing country music and I would still be happy.

  10. What a nice selection! I'm def gonna add some of them to my personalized Christmas playlist! thanks for the inspiration!

  11. I'm not sure I'm going to survive a winter up in the north… my southern spirit and body will die up here in the wilderness. I can't wait for spring to come back. Only 3.5 months now!

  12. Amberr, what a great variety of music. It's definitely winter up here in Canada, and I sure enjoyed being reminded that California Dreamin' was actually about this lousy season. Claire

    • Claire, I did too, and I think winter is lousy, as well. Blah! Thank you for reading and commenting. I really appreciate you.
