Afraid of Things That Go Bump in the Night

How scary would it be to encounter something like this in your home?

You should be afraid of things that go bump in the night and other potential predators. This is why it is essential to have home security. Not only for when you travel, but for anytime you are home. I live in Atlanta and currently use a provider I’m not overly thrilled with.  If you’re familiar with Atlanta, you know the crime rates are higher than the national average.

I’m going to call Atlanta Home Security on Monday, and see if I can’t find a better home monitoring service. Atlanta Home Security is an authorized dealer for ADT security services, and I’ve heard this is one of the better security services on the market. Some of the features that interest me the most are:

  • Pet-sensitive motion detector
  • Wireless keypad
  • High decibel siren
  • Window and door decals

It would scare me to death for my little dog to set off the security alarm while I’m sleeping, so the pet-sensitive detector is pretty important. If someone breaks into my home, I want the siren to be one that startles a burglar into a heart attack. I also like the idea of the decals, because it will further deter a potential home invader. I like to think of it additional coverage.

Home security is important, and nothing gives more peace of mind about your home than an alarm system. When I have a better one installed, I won’t be nearly as worried about those things that go bump in the night.

Do you have a home security system? What is the biggest reason you do or don’t? Tell me in the comments!

  1. A home security expert once told be statistically the best protection you could have is a dog. Even a little frou-frou one. Basic home burglers go for the easiest mark. dog = yappy, alert alarm, and potential gnawing on ankles. Rob the neighbors instead.

We are on a farm, and our old 125lb American Bulldog was awesome. He was the worst watchdog ever, but he was huge and menacing-looking, plus with the reputation of his ‘pit bull’ cousins, no one would mess with him.

Since he died, our big fluffy Pye-Dog has thwarted one robbery. They did manage to grab the kid’s ride-on Gator, but from the way the bikes were tossed on the porch, he ran them off before they could get anything else.

A reputation for having guns in the house is a mixed thing. Out here, everyone has guns (farm and all that), so a robber has already taken that into consideration. And if you are known to have really expensive guns, it’s a huge draw to the bad guys in our neck of the woods. Here, robbers usually know or are aquainted with who they are robbing. Different in Atlanta though!

Debra, well I have a frou frou dog, but she is quite vocal. Maybe I’ll have the double whammy. I hate that your bulldog died, but it’s good to hear that fluffy Pye-Dog is stepping up to handle the job!

I don’t have a security system installed mostly because I live in an apartment and my complex prohibits anything like that being installed in out place. One of my neighbors had magnetic strips that would trigger an alarm installed on her windows and door if they were opened while she was away. But one day the screeching alarm went off while she was gone and the manager went over to see if someone was breaking in..no one was and he had to go in her apartment and cut the wire going to her alarm box in order to turn it off.

The next day we were sent notices that any type of alarm is prohibited from that day forward. she had her’s repaired and it went off again 2 months later. He had to do the same thing and then gave her a 30 day no cause and she left. so anyone caught having an alarm will be kicked out now.I do have a security door as my screen door though.

  3. We’ve had a monitored security system for years. I wonder at times how valuable the monitoring feature is, since the only times it has come into play have been false alarms. I think the signs posted in the yard and near the doors, along with the various lights we have in our yard and carport, probably convince burglars that there are easier places to break into. Still paying for monitoring, though.

  4. I used to work for company that sells ADT products and they’re pretty good.
Here, we don’t use home security system at my parents house but I sometimes wish they have one. All houses here are stacked right next to each other and our security system here are ‘manual’ aka the patrolling security guards.

  5. Darn-tootin’ I have a security system. One thing I like about mine, too, is the panic button so if you get in trouble and the alarm system isn’t set or, if you’re forced to disarm it, you can hit a code and it notifies the police automatically to get their a@@ out here. I’ve never had a problem, thank you, Jesus. I do think the decals and security sign does deter and sends them to other, less protected homes. I’ve heard ADT is good as well. Go for it.

Mary, that’s a shame that one faulty system ruined it for everyone.

David, I think those are good deterrents, too, and they give me security that the alarm doesn’t cover completely.

Maureen, I hope they have security guards on the clock 24/7!
