I have a great travel guest post from David Showell offering great advice for anyone planning to attend the 2012 Olympics in London. Enjoy!

The 2012 Olympics in London will be awesome, especially if you heed some of this great advice.

If the organisers are to be believed, the 2012 Olympic Games in London will be the best we’ve ever seen, and it has to be said the build-up in the UK is whetting the appetities of millions already. If you’re planning to visit Britain during the summer and to enjoy some of the spectacular sporting action, here are a few travel tips that might come in useful.

Know your way around

No matter where you go in the world, it always pays to do a little research first, and since the advent of the Internet Age there’s no excuse not to do so. If you’re flying into London in 2012, you should take a look online at the travel connections between your arrival airport and the city itself. Surprisingly, many visitors head straight for a taxi and end up paying a small fortune for the privilege.

It’s important to remember that all of London’s main airports are several miles away from the centre of the city, so it’s far cheaper to take a train or bus when you leave the terminal building. And because of the regular problems with road congestion, it can often be faster as well. Most Olympic tickets include free travel cards in the price, so it’s a good idea to use them.

Be sensible, be safe

Like all major cities, London is home to several areas which are less safe than others. On the whole, the UK’s capital has a low crime rate when compared with other locations, but it’s still a good idea to be sensible at all times, especially if you are unsure of your surroundings at any particular time.

The Olympic Park, which is home to the main stadium and several other specialist venues, is located in the east of the city. The area is generally very safe, but it pays to be extra careful at night. The police presence in the area is likely to be high during the period, so there’s no need to be unduly worried, however. As always, a little common sense will go a long way.

Enjoy the rest of the city, too

Even if you’re the biggest sports fan in the world, you should still set aside a little time to explore this wonderful metropolis. London is home to some of the most famous landmarks in the world, and no visit to this iconic city is complete without a little sightseeing. The best option is to spend a few hours on a hop-on hop-off bus, in order to see everything.

It’s so relaxing to just sit back and have the bus driver take you to these incredible places. The Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, The London Eye and St Paul’s Cathedral are just some of the things you’ll want to see.

  1. Tourists are very lucky with the Olympics in London this year. Although it will be super crowded, at least the city already had good public transit to start with. When the Olympics came to Los Angeles, I was just a baby. Haven’t gotten a chance to go yet, but my father and brother went to the games.

Susan, this is true about the public transit, but I think large crowds are overwhelming. It would be an awesome experience!

  2. I am not going to the London Olympics, but can forward this info to friends who are. Thanks!

  3. I won’t be going but if it’s anything like the other years, it’s going to be crowded.

Mary, I really don’t like large crowds in summer, but I bet the Olympics will be exciting!

  4. Going to the Olympics once in my lifetime is on my bucket list. I have always wanted to go and watch the high diving event. The Olympics being in London this year would just be a added bonus (its also on my bucket list.) London would be a fascinating destination to go to. It is rich with old world history and as a added bonus I can actually speak the language (hopefully they wouldn’t make to much fun of a little Southern accent and me wearing boots! YIKES!!)

Aaron, now that would be an interesting spectacle. I won’t make the Olympics this year but maybe another time :-)
