Suddenly Sorceress

PMS can be a real witch.

Ivie McKie isn’t your run-of-the-mill kindergarten teacher. After an encounter with a horny goat, Ivie has a confrontation with her lying, cheating fiancé. She is shocked when the big jerk suddenly transforms into a skunk—the black and white furry variety.

Enlisting the help of her shopaholic friend Chloe and sexy club magician Jackson Blake, Ivie is forced to play a literal game of cat and mouse as she races against the clock to change her ex back before she’s arrested for his murder.

With every new spell, a fresh wave of sexual desire draws Jack further into Ivie’s troubles, along with her panties, the car, the kitchen, and assorted seedy bathrooms.

Ivie soon discovers what every witch worth her spell book knows: There’s nothing worse than a bad case of Post Magical Syndrome.

My Review of Suddenly Sorceress

I preface the review by saying how much I love the cover, and how cleverly it fits the theme of the book. Now for the good stuff. From the moment I started reading Suddenly Sorceress, I couldn’t put it down! Initially I wanted to smack Ivie for seeming like such a weakling and pushover, but I quickly changed my mind as she began her journey into total witchy hotness and gorgeousness. Who wouldn’t want the chance to turn their cheating fiancé into a skunk or other appropriate animal?

I’m biased and think know redheads have the most fun, and even in the midst of the semi-nail-biting drama, Ivie is bonding and sexing it up with another smokin’ hot “magician”. Excellent plot, steamy sex scenes, and enough humor to keep you entertained, and the shenanigans involved to get Ivie’s ex back into human form will leave you laughing and anticipating what’s next to come. The real zinger is at the end, and without giving spoilers (despise them), I’ll simply say it’s one magical family reunion. Erica Lucke Dean delivers with her usual smooth writing style and sharp wit, and I’d recommend Suddenly Sorceress to the ladies and gents who like a steamy, paranormal romance with plenty of humor and a lot of naughtiness.

The world we know is gone, destroyed by greed and ignorance. On a post-apocalyptic Earth, centuries into the future, few have survived the Great War. Some have taken refuge deep inside a mountain. One of them, Willem, is exiled to the surface… Alone and struggling to survive, Willem embarks on an epic journey, making a discovery that could once again alter the future of humanity. Willem of the Tafel is an epic tale of survival, second chances, hope and undying love…

Guest Post from Author Hans M. Hirschi from Willem of the Tafel

The Ecosystem of the 26th Century

willem-of-the-tafel

In Willem of the Tafel, there are no more large animals. No cows, no horses, no elephants, no giraffes, no whales. It is my dystopic view of the consequences of an all out nuclear war. Where would such large animals go to hide to survive a nuclear winter? Where would they get their food from?

At the offset of my writing, this had consequences for the diet of people of course, which is why the people of the Tafel, living underground, have become vegan. There simply are no suitable animals left to eat. On the surface, the animal of choice is the chicken, which survived on Madagascar, one of the important locations in the story.

But the absence of large species has much wider consequences, many of which I haven’t really looked at in the book, e.g. in terms of a new balance in the ecosystems. But imagine traveling without having a horse to ride on? For the first time in thousands of years, humans will have to walk. When writing the story, I had to take this into consideration, because walking is a lot slower than riding.

The absence of animals like buffaloes and horses will also impact our use of the land, plowing or fertilizing, impacting the yields of crops.

And here we go and worry how we’d get by without our iPhones or the Internet for a day or two. Imagine if you no longer had access to things we’ve literally taken granted for thousands of years. Removing large animals was one of the most difficult (but necessary from a plausibility reason) decision I had to make in the book. There is one chapter in particular, when Willem and his people travel to Madagascar to attend the big global meeting which required a lot of mathematics, trying to compute the number of days it would take to walk a certain distance. The same is true for the people who must cross the African continent. Just imagine, the hardship of having to cross Africa, and you’ll understand just how different the world of Willem of the Tafel really is.

Q&A with Author Hans M. Hirschi

How did you come up with the title, ‘Willem of the Tafel’?

It came to me as I wrote the particular scene where Willem is given that honorary title by his father in law.

Are there certain characters you would like to go back to, or is there a theme or idea you’d love to work with?

Yes, I would love to spend time with all my characters, and it saddens me that so far I haven’t been able to. All I can hope is that they are doing fine, living their lives in peace and harmony. As for writing more about them? I do not believe in “series” , so I would not. There is no temptation. If a story were to pop up, I’d have to see how to deal with it.

What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

I get criticized mainly for not being a native English speaker. People can tell that my language has an international flavor. It is what it is, I can’t change that, so I take it lightly, but make sure to work with great editors and proofreaders.

The best compliment? Must be friendships I forged with people who read my books.

Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers?

Write, write, write. Get feedback from someone you know to be brutally honest, because if you suck you wanna know early on and rather hear it from a friend than a publisher…

Have you ever gone out in public with your shirt on backwards or your slippers on or other state of disarray accidentally?

Yes! :)

Are you a person who makes their bed in the morning, or do you not see much point?

I would make our bed, but my husband always beats me to it, while I’m getting our son dressed for school. But I would, yes. Sense of style and decorum, remember?

Be honest, how often do you wash your hair?

I’ve begun to reduce shampooing to maybe twice a week, as my hair style is easier to achieve, my hair simply looks better. But my hair is thoroughly rinsed in the shower every day. Who would lie about something like this? I mean had you asked my about crabs, then maybe, but washing my hair?

Do you get road rage? What pisses you off the most about other drivers?

Duh, of course! I am the best driver out there. All those idiots have no clue and should be banned from the roads. Where did they get their licenses anyway? The State lottery? Give me a break…

I live in Sweden and Swedes are the worst drivers (they don’t even have to learn to side park to get a license!), so yes, I get road rage all the time! Things like blinkers not being used, lane merging and right of passage are just the tip of the ice berg… Slow drivers in the passing lane, argh!

What does your writing process look like?

I sit down in front of my laptop, I open Pages and I start to type and watch as my fingers type. I am – literally – the first person to read my stories emerge having absolutely no clue what’s about to be typed…

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?

My son and my marriage.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Traveling the world on a luxurious cruise ship, funded by an overflowing royalty account, writing great stories you’ll remember!

Were you already a great writer? Have you always liked to write?

Why thank you, darling! :) Yes, I have always been writing. My blog alone averages over 200,000 words p.a., and I’ve been doing that for some time now… And now you can add another 150K words of fiction to that, year over year…

If you didn’t like writing books, what would you do for a living?

I wish I were young & cute enough to be an escort, bring some joy to people’s lives… But I think I’d just go back to being a training & development executive. It’s what I’ve been doing before becoming a full time author.

Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? Do you have any advice on how to deal with the bad?

I am guilty as charged. Yes, I do read reviews. Good and bad. I do not respond, but I click the like button on Goodreads if the review is positive and I thank other reviewers. As authors we must have the thinnest  of skins to write our stories, and the thickest of skins in dealing with criticism. When you read a bad review, simply remember the last book you didn’t like. There is simply no point in arguing over taste! Move on. Plus, a book with only good reviews, doesn’t that make you wonder? There are so many people out there paying and cheating to get good reviews…

What is your best marketing tip?

Don’t be an asshole!

How many books have you written prior to this one?

“Willem of the Tafel” is my fifth novel, besides two non-fiction titles and my poetry book.

Do you ever write naked?

Now that is one mental picture I didn’t need right now, and the answer is one you don’t want…

(Now, aren’t you delighted to learn more about Hans Hirschi than what’s in the bio. Fun stuff!)

My Review of Willem of the Tafelwillem-of-the-tafel

Ah, Willem of the Tafel, so much to say, but I’m going to make an attempt to be succinct with the review, because I usually write a short story in itself. Willem starts life in a technologically-advanced sci-fi underworld in a mountain called the Tafel where racism reigns and Willem is on the receiving end of the hatred. A miserable existence to be the last “Ghost” among “Shadows” (futuristic terms for black and white), grappling with the uncomfortable idea of having a vasectomy, and dealing with a bully in the highly unlikable Bongani.

I didn’t bat a lash when Bongani fell to an untimely death, because I loved Willlem and his character from the moment “we met”, and it came as no surprise Willem was the scapegoat to murder. Sentenced to what equated to “death” by being exiled from the mountain to perish in a radioactive world with a trial that never would have been in Willem’s favor, he is sent out to perish.

Beautifully, the nuclear fallout was no longer an issue and Willem thrived, exploring a new world where technology is verboten, and meeting people who knew love, relationships, and family. He also tasted new foods and finds love with Hery, someone who needs love just as desperately. As with everything Hans writes, there were tears, there was laughter, and definitely many incidences of “the feels.”

I applaud Hirschi for going out of his normal zone to venture into science fiction, because he did so magnificently. Buy the book, and if you’re a sap like me, read with a box of tissues for happy and sad moments.

Ultimately there is hope for humanity, and it was lovely to read something POST dystopian rather than the typical grim futuristic worlds of Dystopian anguish. 5 stars easily.

author-hans-hirschi

Hans M Hirschi (b. 1967) has been writing stories ever since he was a child. Adulthood and the demands of corporate life efficiently put an end to his fictional writing for over twenty years.
A global executive in training and channel development, Hans has traveled the world and had previously published non-fictional titles.

The birth of his son and the subsequent parental leave provided him with the opportunity to unleash his creative writing once again. With little influence over his brain’s creative workings, he indulges it, going with the flow.

A deeply rooted passion for, faith in a better world, in love, tolerance and diversity are a red thread throughout both his creative and non-fictional work. His novels might best be described as “literary romance, engaging characters and relevant stories that won’t leave you untouched, but hopeful.”

Hans is a proud member of the Swedish Writers’ Union and the Writers’ Center in Sweden.

Darkhaven book tour

Welcome to the Darkhaven book tour and scavenger hunt. Towards the end, you’ll find the letter for the scavenger hunt, but before that, enjoy an excerpt from Darkhaven and 7 fun facts about the author. Oh, and there’s a giveaway!

Darkhaven Excerpt

It had been weeks since Ayla last felt a breeze touch her face. As she slipped through the door into the shadows of the square, the scents of a summer night caressed her with their familiarity: aromatic pine, horse manure, the dragonlilies that grew outside the tower. Above her, the patterns of the stars were unchanged. She hadn’t been locked up that long, after all. It just felt like forever.

There will be no-one patrolling the square. She repeated her brother’s words to herself. Go straight across. The postern will be open, and you’ll find supplies there to help you. After that I can do no more.

She hesitated, skin crawling with tiny spiders of unease. The darkness on the far side of the square was too heavy for the moonlight to penetrate; anything could be waiting for her. Yet Myrren’s instructions hadn’t failed her so far. When she’d tried the door of her cell at the seventh bell, it had been unlocked just as he’d promised. And the two men in the guardroom had been deep in the oblivion of sleep, not stirring even when she crept past them to climb the flight of steps that was the only way out. Her brother’s words were her compass. She had to trust them.

Straightening her spine, she stepped into the illuminated patch at the centre of the square, forcing herself to walk as though she were unafraid. Her ears rang with the silence, straining to hear any sounds of pursuit; her muscles quivered with the need to flee. She didn’t think she could bear another day trapped in that tiny room with its one barred window, where desperation bled from the walls like damp. If they found her now it would be better to run, to Change, to fight until they had to kill her to subdue her … yet no-one came. The shadows on the far side of the square reached out to enfold her, wrapping her in darkness once more – and then she was standing in front of the postern gate.

Quite calm now, floating in a numb place beyond fear, she lifted the latch. The gate creaked softly as it swung open; she glanced back over her shoulder, fighting to control the harsh gasps of her breath. But the square remained empty, and no vengeful light flared in the windows of the tower. After a long, frozen moment, Ayla stepped through the gate and pulled it closed behind her.

7 Facts about Author A.F.E Smith

I know seven may seem an odd choice, but Darkhaven is set in a walled city that consists of seven concentric circles. So here are seven facts about me!

  1. If I had to choose one food to live off for the rest of my life, it would be chocolate. The rest of my life probably wouldn’t last very long, but at least I’d enjoy myself.
  2. I have two children. Sometimes it feels like fifty. (They’re small, but very LOUD.)
  3. Of the three initials in my name, the A stands for Anna. But if I told you what the F and the E stand for, I’d have to kill you – or at least give you a stern talking-to.
  4. There are four people in my family and each of our birthdays falls in a different season. Not only that, but each of us has a zodiac sign that belongs to a different element. So we’re in perfect balance. This may mean nothing at all. Or it may mean we have secret superpowers. *shifty eyes*
  5. Five is my favourite number. It also happens to be my house number. Not that the number had any bearing on whether I wanted to live here. *more shifty eyes*
  6. I’ve been writing since I was six years old. My first book was about a flying rabbit. Since then, I’ve graduated to flying unicorns.
  7. My photo is on the seventh double page of my school leavers’ yearbook. You can tell it’s me because I’m wearing a hat, dark glasses and a false moustache. (I guess, even then, I was practising being incognito.)

~My Review of When You Make it Home~

I didn’t just like this book, I absolutely LOVED When You Make it Home, and anything written by Claire Ashby in the future will be on my virtual bookshelf to be devoured greedily in one sitting, because I simply couldn’t put this book down. I admit I had a ton of previous obligations, and knowing I had committed today to the author, I started reading the book last night at 10:00pm. I’d decided the day before I’d be keeping the same sleep schedule with an hour variance max, because supposedly keeping a consistent sleep schedule helps prevent obesity.

Once I got into the first couple of pages and Theo and Meg really meeting for the first time coincidentally, the book had me enthralled and sleep schedule be damned. I read it on my iphone, and while listening to my husband snore peacefully, I read far into the night–even getting out of the bed to sit on the floor twice to continue reading when my phone needed charging. I finally wrapped up When You Make it Home at 4:00am.

Anyhoo, onto the logistics of the book. Meg, pregnant and conflicted with family issues and former boyfriend baggage, and Theo, the veteran wounded in Afghanistan, made for an unlikely but wildly appropriate couple. The author’s portrayal of the emotions of a wounded vet coming home in pain and feeling as though his life no longer had purpose resonated with me. I spend at least once a month with my uncle at the Atlanta VA, and seeing the maimed and wounded while going down the corridors of that depressing place and is utterly heartbreaking. Theo’s battle with his personal demons and injuries were equally heartbreaking, and Meg’s conviction to hide her pregnancy as long as possible initially seemed ludicrous but made complete sense as her character is fully revealed throughout the course of the novel.

Every character, from the sweet Ellie, the uptight Nina, Meg’s twin brother, the naughty Chelsea and everyone else in the novel are three-dimensional and either likable or understandable. For readers who love cookie-cutter romances, you won’t find that in When You Make it Home. You will, however, find a masterfully written, poignant, and beautiful love story intermingled with a plot full of humor, heartbreak, love, intrigue, and steamy but classy sex scenes. The character conflict will keep you furiously turning the pages seeking resolution, and the ending is nothing short of beautiful.

My only regret is there are only five star ratings possible, because When You Make it Home is worthy of many more.

Sarai’s Fortune Synopsis

Zac Montclair’s first priority is to protect his people. With the escalating war between factions of shifters over land and resources, he has agreed to an alliance between his polar bears and the Shadowcat Nation of cougar shifters. But the treaty comes with a condition…he must accept one of their Seers into his Timik and put her under his personal protection.

Sarai Bouchard doesn’t need her supernatural gift to know that Kyle Carstairs’s obsession with controlling her ability will eventually result in her misery and demise. Her power is essential to her people’s survival, so when Kyle goes rogue, she’s sent to Zac Montclair to keep her safe. However, her visions reveal that while staying will lead to their becoming lovers, it also leads to his death. Leaving Zac will result in her own.

If Sarai can’t find a way to change the future, she will be forced to choose…save her lover or save herself.

Excerpt from Sarai’s Fortune

Sarai concentrated on precise, sharp movements with as much power as she could muster. She’d only been working out for ten minutes or so. She’d started the day similarly yesterday. She cooked breakfast, eating with the guys. She dragged George and Scott on more sightseeing trips. Today she’d decided to explore a small portion of Central Park. She didn’t try to lose them this time. When they’d got home, they’d hit the gym.

Now, Sarai tuned out Scott and George—who were sparring across the way from her—to focus on her own drills.

“How about you try that out on a man who moves and reacts.”

Sarai spun on her heel to find Zac standing behind her. He was wearing running pants and a tight tank top, which meant she didn’t need to use her imagination to picture the muscles of his arms and chest. They were on display. Her own personal show. Sarai swallowed.

Then she computed what he’d said. How was she going to get out of this? The truth was she couldn’t spar. Her visions messed her up. But that was a secret she had no intention of sharing with three people.

“Not really a good idea.”

He stared at her for a long moment. Then he glanced over her shoulder at George and Scott who’d stopped to listen. “I’ve got this, fellas. Why don’t you go back up to the apartment?”

There was no doubt in her mind that was a command, not a suggestion. Clearly the guys thought so too. She watched them leave the room with wide eyes.

As the door closed behind them, Zac’s hands landed on her shoulders, turning her to face them. “Okay, kuluk. It’s just you and me now. What are you not saying?”

Sarai had never felt this vulnerable in her life. Or this scared. This man got to her in a way no one else ever had. How was she supposed to resist that?

“Why is this so important to you?”

He moved his hands from her shoulders to frame her face, his fingers threading through the dark blond strands of her hair. “Keeping you safe is important to me. I need to know how much you can defend yourself if you have to. It will help me determine just what I need to prepare for. No surprises. Okay?”

Sarai took a deep breath. He couldn’t have meant it that way. Just the thought of being important to this big, strong man connected with the frightened, lonely little girl who’d spent her life just trying to survive. But she couldn’t think that way. She had to leave him, and that knowledge made her want to cry.

Seeing her hesitation, he brushed her cheeks softly with the pads of his thumbs. “Let me help you with this burden,” he murmured softly, his voice a hypnotic, deep rumble.

Sarai bit her lip. Sharing this with him really wasn’t that big a deal. She knew she could trust him.

On a deep inhale, she gave a tiny nod and started talking before she could change her mind. “Okay.”

He gave her one of those rare little half-smiles, making her suddenly very glad she had agreed to capitulate. Thankfully, he released her and stepped back, giving her room to breathe.
